2010 Divisions - L.M.L.L. Softball

Softball Majors - The Softball Majors division provides eligible girls with the opportunity to play competitive softball in a fun and recreational environment. While winning games is an objective of play, equitable participation, sportsmanship, and team building are also paramount goals in this division. Players are encouraged to improve their basic softball skills (e.g. throwing, catching and hitting), and to learn advanced techniques such as bunting and base stealing. Regular attendance at team practices plus a weekday and weekend game is expected of all players and coaches; practicing at home is also encouraged.

This division is open to girls in 7th grade (who were born after 1996), girls in 6th grade, and a limited number of girls in 5th grade who qualify to “play up” and are drafted to fill an available spot on a Softball Majors division team. The number of registered 7th and 6th grade girls will determine the available spots for 5th grade girls to be drafted into this division. A tryout and a coaches’ draft will be held to fill team rosters. To be eligible for the Softball Majors division draft, 5th grade girls must request to “play up” at registration or at the tryout. Any 5th grade girl who does not attend the tryout, or does not meet the League’s skill level assessment, may not be drafted in this division. 5th grade girls who are not drafted in the Softball Majors division will be eligible both to play in the Softball Intermediate division and to be “called up” to play in individual games in the Softball Majors division during the season.

Softball Intermediate - The Softball Intermediate division provides eligible girls with the opportunity to learn and develop core softball skills in a fun and recreational environment. Scores of each game are kept and reported in this division for purposes of maintaining standings, which determine seeds in the playoffs. While winning games is an objective of play, the paramount goal in this division is to create an environment in which girls can learn and practice the basic skills (e.g. throwing, catching and hitting) and also learn advanced techniques such as pitching and base stealing. Regular attendance at team practices plus a weekday and weekend game is expected of all players and coaches.

This division is open to girls in 5th grade, 4th grade, and a limited number of girls in 3rd grade who qualify to “play up” and are drafted to fill an available spot on a Softball Intermediate division team. The number of registered 5th and 4th grade girls will determine the available spots for 3rd grade girls to be drafted into this division. A tryout and a coaches’ draft will be held to fill team rosters. To be eligible for the Softball Intermediate division draft, 3rd grade girls must request to “play up” at registration or at the tryout. Any 3rd grade girl who does not attend the tryout, or does not meet the League’s skill level assessment may not be drafted in this division. 3rd grade girls who are not drafted in the Softball Intermediate division will be eligible both to play in the Softball Minors division and to be “called up” to play in individual games in the Softball Intermediate division during the season.

Softball Minors - The Softball Minors division aims to provide a fun and recreational environment for girls to learn and develop the core skills of softball (e.g. throwing, catching and hitting). Scores are not kept. Players and coaches will participate in a multi-week League-sponsored clinic, run by professional instructors, who will teach core skills and include instructor-supervised scrimmages. Attendance at the clinics, at the weekly games that follow the end of the clinic cycle, and at team practices is expected of all players and coaches in this division.

Participation in this division is open to girls in 3rd and 2nd grade, as well as girls in 1st grade who played in the Softball T-Ball division last year (and who don’t want to play again in the Softball T-Ball division). There will be no tryout or coaches’ draft in this division. Players will be assigned to teams by the Division Commissioner and may request to be assigned with a few friends. Any 3rd grade girls who are not drafted to play in the Softball Intermediate division will be assigned to teams in this division.

Softball T-Ball - Open to all girls in 1st grade, and girls in Kindergarten who played in the Kickball division last year (and who don’t want to play again in the Kickball division). There will be no tryout or coaches’ draft in this division. Players will be assigned to teams by the Division Commissioner and may request to be assigned with a few friends. Attendance at weekend games is expected of all players and coaches in this division.

Kickball - There is one co-ed Kickball division open to all boys and girls who are 6 and 5 years old. There will be no tryout or coaches’ draft in this division.
